Before personal computers, most people tracked their finances with a pen and a notebook or other handy paper book that allowed you to write down every bit of money you spent and to post that budget for future reference.

With the invention of the PC, keeping track of your money doesn't have to be rocket science. My own personal strategy for my finances is a combination of efforts that allow both freedom from the boring and freedom from having to double check your figures all the time. It also gives me accurate and up to date looks at my financial situation.

My first strategy is to keep a file box underneath my desk for receipts to go in. Once a week I clean out my purse and my wallet of the receipts collected for purchases or bills. My husband also surrenders his receipts if any for his week of purchases. Once we have put these in the box for a month, we then scan then into monthly files. This eliminates the need to keep the paper receipts out in the open. Saving them to a file also automatically lets you identify exactly each month and the expenses incurred.

After we have scanned and filed these receipts, I enter them into my Quicken program. If you have not used Quicken, you are complicating your life. Quicken is an excellent personal financial tool. It is simple and has excellent help features included. You can download your online accounts right into your Quicken program.

It lets you set up all of your accounts so that everything coming in and everything going out is connected. You know in a second how much money you have available at any given moment. It also gives you the opportunity to connect bank accounts, 401 accounts, mortgage and loan accounts and more with one password. I love that feature. I use that to know if we are growing at a rate we should in the 401k plan and also transfer funds from various accounts without spending a lot of time going from site to site.

The most cherished part of the Quicken software is the tax preparation features. With less than 5 clicks you can have your taxes totally done without worrying about errors. The information you have been putting in for the last year will be processed into your tax return without the hassle of going into a tax preparation place. Or you can print out your yearly information to take to the tax office with you.

We use the scanning of receipts and the Quicken software to manage every aspect of our financial world. To simply our lives, we stay on top of the finances. We set aside one day a month to take care of all of it. It is very efficient and has changed our financial future from speculation to a plan that will provide us with a stable future and a stable retirement.

Finances don't have to be a disaster if you are aware of where your money is going and you keep track efficiently.

Quicken also helps you set goals for saving and spending and gives advice on potential transactions you are planning.
